Max Birshtein was born in 1914 in Kiev. In 1936 he entered the Moscow State Art Institute, where he studied with Igor Grabar, Dmitry Mochalsky and other famous artists and teachers. Не was influenced not only by his immediate teachers and Pavel Deineka, but also by French Impressionists, from whom he drew a bold stroke and a direct perception of the world.
During his life the artist made many trips: to the White Sea, to Chukotka, to Uzbekistan, to France, to Romania, to the countries of Africa.
He was a laureate of the All-Union Contest of Artists of 1975, a gold medalist of the Academy of Arts in 2000.
His works are in the Tretyakov Gallery, the Russian Museum, the Museum of Modern Art and private collections.
M. Birshtein died in 2000 in Moscow.
